Mistaken Obsession is the perfect mix of romance and thriller. Eve Grafton’s first novel is full of intrigue and suspense that will hook readers.
Mistaken Obsession tells the story of Bethany Randford, an ambitious Australian businesswoman who travels to Argentina to look for a hotel for her father’s company to purchase. While she’s inspecting the hotel, she falls in love with the hotel’s charming manager, Alessandro Rodrigos. After they marry, Bethany becomes entangled in a land war over the hotel and faces danger after a threatening figure from Sandro’s past reappears.
Grafton writes characters that are compelling and complex in this novel. Her writing is fast-paced and immediately pulls readers into the novel. Bethany is a protagonist that is equally romantic and pragmatic that readers will root for in this story. Her business sense and physical strength coupled with her vulnerability make her a fascinating character. Sandro is a complicated leading man that is not the knight in shining armor in typical romance novels, but is a fully developed character readers will empathize with in the book.
Argentina is a character of its own in Mistaken Obsession. Grafton traveled to Buenos Aires, and her attention to detail shows in the vivid description of the bustling modernity the Argentinian city and the beautiful countryside. Grafton also addresses the political turmoil of the 1970’s that Argentina survived decades ago. She deftly writes about the repercussions of the “Dirty War’’ against political subversives that affect the nation today. While Bethany is a globetrotting character, she is pulled into the exotic lure of Argentina and readers will be intrigued by the country as well.
Mistaken Obsession is a novel that has an interesting combination of romance, suspense, and thriller. Fans of Janet Evanovich will like the suspense and romance of this book. Mistaken Obsession is the perfect read for book clubs that are looking for short novels packed with romance and adventure. This novel would also be ideal for the romance section of libraries and as part of readers’ romance novels collection.
