Famine has reached the Yhaar people on the planet of Findang. In short, the universe is dying. Through the darkness and oncoming death, a small glimpse of hope and redemption shines. Krohl is a cyborg who embarks on a quest to discover three relics which would give him the ability to save not only the planet Findang, but all life from complete destruction. This is a task filled with much uncertainty as Krohl embarks on his quest, not knowing the extent he must go to save people he does not know, and a world from complete annihilation!
The Shattered Trinity is the first in a series by Mike Pearson, and what a fantastic novel to jump start the series it is. It is a very well written being both entertaining and interesting to read. There are different points of view throughout the novel. Each chapter begins with a quote or an excerpt from another character or private journal relating to the story at hand. This gives readers a different insight as to what is happening beyond the current chapter’s view. Each of the characters are intrinsically complex and have a depth to them beyond what readers see on the surface. They each have their own unique personality and backstory, hooking the readers into wanting to know more about each of them.
The writing style is wonderfully descriptive. Pearson paints a clear image of his settings and characters. Readers can easily envision the cyborgs and humans, along with crafted alien cultures called the Skorchawks, the Bezerks, the Djodask, the Kympar and Radham; as the author’s skillful descriptive narration create vivid imagery forming mental storyboards as if watching a movie on the big screen. No detail is left out. While normally this can become tiresome and feel cumbersome while reading, Pearson executes this in a way which makes these descriptions come alive. They almost take on a personality of their own, as if they were a separate character. To be able to accomplish this is the mark of a fantastic writer, one who will quickly be able to make a name for himself within this genre.
The opening prologue gives a sharp insight to the character and draws the reader in. With a line such as “Someone, anyone…I want out of this. Please.” you are hooked on the story and become eager to find out what is happening; why this person wants out. It is easy to find lines and quotes which really stand out to make this book a one-of-a-kind. It is so hard not to enjoy reading this book. This novel is the perfect story for someone who enjoys the science fiction genre, written with a unique skill of combining fantasy, action and adventure. A STAR rating by Pacific Book Review has been given to The Shattered Trinity as it is wonderfully written; a great story filled with memorable and compelling characters. What more could you ask for in a soon to be best-selling novel? Definitely check it out and add it to your reading list.
