The Romero Strain II is a post-apocalyptic tale set in New York City which involves zombies and mutants battling against each other as well as with humans; while the military and scientists fight to contain the epidemic and create order out of the chaos. Although this book stands on its own merits, it is a sequel to The Romero Strain; as readers of the first book will be thrilled to have the 2nd installment.
Author TS Alan has a limitless imagination and describes the battle scenes along with the overall environment with such detail that it really brings it to life for the reader. The mutant characters are uniquely interesting, not a rubber-stamp copy of other creatures in this particular genre. The interactions between the mutants and humans go deeper; such as when they lead to romantic and sex fueled relationships resulting in offspring which combine the strengths and weaknesses of both parents.
The Romero Strain II is extremely well written. There are zero errors to distract the reader from enjoying the story at their individual top pace to see what will happen next. The characters are well developed and multifaceted. The reader gets the opportunity to really get to know them, especially J.D., partly because his internal struggles are intense and relatable on many levels.
This book is ideal reading for sci-fi fans of all ages. Although there have been many recent stories about zombies, this book offers readers a unique perspective and an entertaining story with suspense, romance, a heavy military influence with tales of battles and weaponry and many notes on the human condition and the motivations behind choices we make.
This book has a fresh feel with its suspenseful scenes, interesting characters, and their interactions with each other throughout the story, as well as complex struggles between humans and mutants. I enjoyed the many pop culture references about movies, books, and music. I liked how J.D. was motivated to reconnect with his musical roots to soothe his partner and their child.
The Romero Strain II is an intense book which keeps the reader entertained and concerned about what will happen next. The author is knowledgeable in crucial areas such as weaponry and the organization of the military. Overall, the attention to detail and the high quality of the writing elevate TS Alan’s book above most of the books in the zombie genre.
