The main point the author makes to the readers is how fully we live our lives. When reading, you are made to reflect on your own past; the decisions you made and the general perspective of things. We are introduced to Anaya, a thirty-five year old doctor, who for months was taking care of Gregory, a senior citizen at an aged care facility. Anaya was tasked with looking after Gregory; she lovingly attended to him every time she visited. On the last day of her visit, Gregory gave the doctor a fine, beautifully made watch. Gregory knew that Anaya would die tragically on the same day, and it would turn back in time. The theme of time travel is introduced in this part of the book.
Anaya was given one condition; that she had to choose the time and place to reset the clock, and change a single thing she had done in the past. This made me think; if given a chance, can I redo some things in my life? The answer is yes. I know I’m not alone in this. If given an opportunity, a good number of us will redo some of the things we did in the past. It could be making different decisions, visiting places we have never visited, getting rid of toxic elements in our lives or just choosing different paths.
What would you do if you were in Anaya’s shoes? What single thing from your past would you do differently if given a second chance? Anaya dropped out of school at seventeen. She regretted it, but what if altering that one thing in your past could make situations go south? What if a part of your life would spiral out of control if you changed your past deeds? A tragedy could occur by reversing your decision, right? With these questions, the author goes on to make the reader ponder further.
The Watchmaker’s Doctor has been written in a simple style that can be understood even by young readers. The author has done a great job by trying to have the reader contemplate on personal life choices. By having Gregory give Anaya the watch and mentioning traveling back in time, G.M.T Schuilling has enabled the reader to examine personal experiences and have a different perspective on life. This book has been written for young adults, teens, and people who are in college. The genre is fitting for the target audience, as it helps the reader relate to the story. The author also touches on bipolar disorder and gives the reader an insight into the life of someone living with the condition.
I enjoyed reading this story as the book is both informative and simple to understand. I love Gregory as he shows appreciation for his caretaker. I’m fond of timepieces, and by having Gregory give a watch to Anaya, the author made me create a bond with the character. The Watchmaker’s Doctor has a beautiful storyline, and by the time you finish reading the book, you will have loved the characters and their roles they played. I thoroughly enjoyed The Watchmaker’s Doctor (Erase and Rewind Book 1), it is a captivating story with an innovative and imaginative approach to time travel.
