The book entails the events that happened after a major tragedy; an EMP (Electro Magnetic Pulse) blast that sets life back to the 1800s. The bombardment of electrons caused an instantaneous loss of all computers, communication, electrical devices and the power grid, resulting in the world being changed back 100 or so years without modern technology.
The reader is introduced to Joshua and Jessica at the beginning of the book. The two are deeply in love, but the challenge comes with their parents. Jessica’s dad wants nothing to do with Joshua as he doesn’t think that the man is fit for his daughter. We are informed that Jessica’s father, Ben Randal, had on a previous occasions warned Joshua to stay away from his daughter. Joshua seems stubborn, or perhaps desperately in love, as he is now determined to meet his lover’s father. Jessica’s dad is very protective of her. Jessica, not being of legal age, was one factor which made Ben Randal dislike Joshua being with his daughter.
One is able to determine Joshua’s character within the first few pages. Like his father, Joshua was a salesperson and both Joshua and his dad knew a lot of languages, which helped them to survive in this newly altered world. Joshua is street-smart and knows how to deal with people and is also uniquely observant. Joshua’s mother, however, loves Jessica and wishes that her son has a long lasting relationship with her, knowing Jessica is also a little rebellious. Throughout this book, the author enables the reader to think about basic things such as knowing the people you live with. The characters in the book have different habits, and with this, the reader is aware that even in real life, our neighbors and people will interact with us in different ways.
Romance is among the major themes in the book. Michael Kravitz shows how love unites people no matter what the circumstances might be. Joshua and Jessica were hell-bent on being together, even with opposition from both their parents. The friendship between Vivian and Jessica is also admirable. Jessica came from Nebraska and Vivian came from the projects and Florida. Jessica had a loving family and a well-structured home while her friend Vivian was raised by her single mother. Vivian was an African American, who had struggled to live with her mother Camille. She had a difficult life growing up, moving from one area to another, and being exposed to societal ills. With the comparison of the two friends, the author shows the reader that good friendships are formed even between people who lead different lifestyles. The reader is able to draw comparisons between the two characters, and in a brilliant way, the author has the reader reflect on life and the different social classes. Kravitz’s use of similes and metaphors makes his writing style more colorful for the reader. He also adds in a little humor once in a while, to make the storyline more interesting. Reading EMP Causality was amusing, as readers can relate to Joshua’s and Jessica’s storyline.
The book gets engaging as you dig deeper into the pages, and this makes the reader more interested in the events that are unfolding. The author mixed some sad and happy stories, but in the end, the readers will enjoy this piece of literary art. This is a good book for teens and even adults, as the language used is easy to understand. The author’s use of stylistic devices makes the book more absorbing. The story has an engaging pace that makes it hard to put down with twists and excitement that will leave you wanting more.
The book brings a fresh breath of air in the fiction genre. Michael Kravitz, in more than one way, was able to bring out lessons to readers needing to be learned. I personally loved how the storyline was constructed and the subject matter the writer brought up. Michael kravitz has established his style of writing, and I have to commend his written voice.
The ending is compelling and the reader is able to embrace the author’s final thoughts. Anyone who gets a hold of the book will value the time they take to read, as the author did a fantastic job with his creativity.
