The second book of MB’s Adventures in Dr. T’s Marvelous Zoo brings us once again into the imaginative world of author R.E. Tegtmeier, M.D., as he created a bunch of friendly and somewhat silly animal characters, each with a splattering of fanciful unique creativity.
In his Book 2, we find M.B. visiting the zoo when all of the sudden the zookeeper and all of the inhabitants are upset and worried about the baby monkey who has climbed to the top of the tallest tree. Looking down from the highest branch, the baby monkey was frightened and afraid to climb down, and was stuck at the top. This called for the Dreck and the Sneck to the rescue! The Sneck, with its flying propeller head was able to go up high and see the baby monkey, and made sure it was okay. Then they called upon the Dreck to run over and assist. You see, the Dreck has a neck which can extend up, like a scissor ladder to reach up high. M.B. got on top of the Dreck’s head while he was lifted up to the top branch of the highest tree. At that point M.B. put the baby monkey on Dreck’s head and was lowered gently back down to the ground. All of the animals and even the zookeeper cheered as M.B. and the Dreck saved the baby monkey.
Each of MB’s Adventures in Dr. T’s Marvelous Zoo books follows a similar format. First is a silly poem of whimsical wording along with illustrations by Jen Stone bringing a humorous introduction to what follows. The next part is the adventure, with M.B. figuring out how to solve a problem safely and to the benefit of all. Then there is a section where M.B. would play with his friends at the zoo. This time M.B. flew around with the Sneck to see the world from above. M.B. also slides down the Dreck’s neck, time and time again, as children would play on a slide in a park. It is in this section where children can make up their own stories and play with the zoo creatures. All of this ends with kind wishes for the children to go off to get a good night’s sleep, a written “tuck-in” to bed.
MB’s Adventures in Dr. T’s Marvelous Zoo collection of illustrated children’s book is a wonderful addition to a family library as well as a thoughtful gift for a baby shower or a younger one’s birthday. Who knows what might follow in the next adventures of M.B. and his friends?
