This book tells the story of an ordinary girl who conquered the difficulties she faced to emerge as a strong independent woman at the end. Being born to a mother who was fragile and nervous and a father who faced his demons through alcohol, Kathleen grew up through a few challenges. The author takes us into two sides of her life; her personal life included family and other acquaintances and the other side of growing up in South Africa and Kenya during the colonial days. I loved how she described her journey to Kenya and how their family settled in the East African country. Even at a tender age, Kathleen had a lot of good memories while living in the country with her family.
The first chapter of the book basically talks about race riots in South Africa and the fight for independence in Kenya by the Mau Mau. One thing I liked about this book was the author had either a quote from a book or a verse from the Bible at the start of every chapter. I also observed that the quoted words were somehow related to the story that was to be told in the specific chapter. I appreciate that she did this as I am a fan of short nuggets of wisdom.
The saddest part of Kathleen’s story was when she miscarried time and again. I felt sorry for her despite it happening ages ago. Her relationship with God after the miscarriages was interesting though. I love how Kathleen never gave up and continued to believe in God. I was so excited when after reading on, saw that she got to be pregnant again. I remember the words “It is a Christmas miracle Kathleen, accept it and take care of the two of you”, by her doctor. I could feel how happy she was that despite all difficulties, she got the news of her pregnancy when she was five months.
Kathleen Bush has gone through a lot in life. I may not relate to everything she talked about but I sure admire her for her resilience and bravery when things went south. I enjoyed reading every bit of her life story. The author’s life may not be the typical life we know, but the fact remains that one can learn plenty of lessons through her story. By reading this book I got to understand that no one is sure of a perfect and smooth ride in this world. Life may be a rollercoaster but by trusting in God, one is able to achieve even the impossible.
It is in affliction that we find our strong points. No one knows us better than God. All we should do is trust in him as he will take care of everything. The main reason I enjoyed reading this book is that it is a light read that is full of encouraging words. Kathleen’s story inspired me. Her style of writing is also excellent and easy to read. I would recommend this book to readers who have a thing for real-life stories and motivational books. You will not only be encouraged but also live the author’s life through her words.
