Mark Twain once said, “It’s no wonder that truth is stranger than fiction. Fiction has to make sense.” In author Patrick Robertson’s book Rory’s Adventure, a surreal journey of one young man as he experiences life takes turn after unexpected turn, revealing a sense of self-discovery and examination of life overall.

In this book, the author explores the life of Rory, who begins life as an eager young man who’s goal of becoming a doctor is intertwined with his sense of adventure. Traveling to Mexico, gaining his doctorate and engaging in one relationship after another, Rory finds himself living a rather eventful life to say the least. Extramarital affairs, secret pacts to help father a child he is never to see, and a long history that leads to a spiritual trial like no other, Rory goes into realms never before explored, and must wrestle with the discovery of who he is and what his actions have caused both physically and spiritually.

This was a unique book to say the least. An exploration of the human spirit like no other, the author has a unique way of transitioning from character development and exposition to a quick and sudden physical interaction between two characters that one wouldn’t see coming. The blend of Rory’s professional goals with his inability to stop himself from exploring one physical relationship after another, the author expertly showcases the effect that kind of lifestyle can have not only on one person, but on those in his life as well.

This is a book fit for anyone who enjoys surreal fantasy driven stories that blend realistic characters and situations with sudden bursts of mythological, spiritualistic and fantasy driven themes that one wouldn’t expect to find, but somehow makes the story that much more cohesive in nature. Although the narrative did slow at times, the author kept the reader hooked with their expert and detailed analysis of the characters and the imagery used throughout the book. As a fan of fantasy driven narratives, I did enjoy the exploration of a man’s realistic life suddenly being judged and looked under a mythological microscope, and seeing him interact with the people in his life as opposed to his interactions with these larger than life mythological figures was fascinating to see unfold.

This is a great read for anyone who enjoys surrealism and fantasy driven narratives. Creative, mature and evenly paced throughout its entirety, the story does a great job of hooking the reader and creating memorable characters that last throughout the nearly 500 page book.
