American country musician Mary Gauthier once said, “People who have been through trauma, their souls are hurting.” In author Marie Giles self0help book It’s OK To Tell: Healing Process Diary, the author writes a heartbreaking and painful journey in an attempt to deal with a trauma from her past that has continued to follow her into adulthood.

Now as a warning to readers out there, this book does deal with sexual abuse and the affects it has on a person, so if this is a triggering subject – be warned. In this book, the author writes down the personal struggles and emotions of reaching out and finally confronting the person who abused her as a child, and the process of reaching out to family, learning she wasn’t alone in the abuse, and finding a way to come to terms with what happened as she lives her life and cares for her own family.

The author’s writing style definitely feels more personal. The book is written in a journal writing style, with the author’s need to get her story out onto paper evident in the urgency in which she begins the story. Despite some instances where readers may notice some run-on sentences and grammatical errors, these only serve to enhance the writing as it allows the reader to feel connected to the author more deeply, feeling the
raw emotions of the author and seeing the progression of dealing with the process of going through therapy and court cases.

This is a read for anyone interested in journal style writing, self-help books on dealing with trauma and anyone who has ever been affected by sexual abuse and is looking for someone who can relate to their experiences and what they are going through in life. From the book’s first pages I felt emotionally invested and could feel the author’s painful struggle to retell the events which led to her writing this book.

This is a must read book for anyone suffering from a childhood trauma like this or interested in journal writing overall. It’s a personal, emotional tale of painful childhood trauma and overcoming that pain, which is something many people can relate to. The more people who share their stories and confront this awful abuse, the more people who can overcome their pain and find a brighter and more hopeful tomorrow.
