Aussie Impasse is the final book in the author’s trilogy about the adventures of the main character, David Granger. The previous books were Aussie Pilot and Aussie KnowHow.
Aussie Impasse is a tale full of imagination, interesting characters, and challenges. There are resolutions to the main themes in the story but the reader is also left wanting to know what happens next for the main character and his family. The story is well written overall. The beginning of the book contains expressions that are not familiar to the typical U.S. based reader. There are a lot of new characters to learn about too but once the reader acclimates to the author’s fantasy worlds, it is a pleasure to experience the story unfolding and the characters developing.
As the final book in the trilogy, obviously this book will appeal most to readers who have read Aussie Pilot and Aussie Know-How. However, this book would be entertaining and interesting for fantasy and sci-fi fans in general based on the book’s own merits. It was refreshing to read dramatic scenes full of mishaps and explosions that didn’t include a lot of blood and gore along with the unnecessary violence that has become so common. This story is focused on relationships and characters working together to care for each other and challenge each other to solve challenges, both minor and major.
Although I have not read the first two books in the trilogy, I do enjoy reading fantasy and science fiction books and enjoyed the multiple storylines and learning about what was in store for each of the characters. The story contains an interesting mixture of reality and fantasy and current technology and “old school” ways of doing things. As the author states in the forward, trilogy was inspired by movies and books he enjoyed while growing up and the stories have been developed overtime and have grown into their current form.
The characters are relatable and readers of the trilogy will enjoy getting to know David Granger and his family throughout the series. This final book focuses on his daughter, Susan, who is dealt a challenging blow early in the story but perseveres and makes the best of her situation and thrives with the help and support of her father, her husband, and others in the community.
Aussie Impasse would benefit from a general proofreading to improve its readability, as there are quite a few word usage errors and general typos. In general, I appreciated the illustrations throughout the book; I found them to be helpful with immersion into the author’s fantasy world. There are some illustrations that didn’t seem relevant to where they appear in the book. Overall, any sci-fi enthusiast would relish in the world created by the imagination of author Kevin Johnson.
