American author and self-help lecturer Susan Cain once said, “Many people believe that introversion is about being antisocial, and that’s really a misperception. Because actually it’s just that introverts are differently social. So they would prefer to have a glass of wine with a close friend as opposed to going to a loud party full of strangers.” In author Liliane C’s novel Don’t Drop It, a young teen who’s always been somewhat of a nerd and an introvert finds herself forced into a very social world, and discovers more things about herself than she ever imagined.
In this novel, young teen Alexandria discovers that a new rule at her school is forcing her to join an extracurricular activity within the school. As someone who has spent her life playing video games, delving deep into nerd culture and never fully being able to make friends at school, this news is devastating, and soon she is corralled into the school’s volleyball team. However she soon discovers skills in the sport she never knew she had, and a desire to maintain the new relationships she’s building as a result of the team.
Although a short read, this novel was beautifully written in a way that many young readers will be able to relate to. Capturing the high school experience and teenage experience overall of the modern teenager, the author delves into the intricacies of introverts and the struggle to push past the shyness and seemingly anti-social behavior to enjoy other aspects of life. While some suffer from introversion more so than others, this novel overall does a great job of creating a memorable story with relatable characters which will draw the reader in instantly.
This is a novel meant for anyone who enjoys YA style short reads, novels with relatable protagonists struggling to overcome personal hardships similar to their own, and overall quick reads that can be devoured pretty quickly. As a fan of the YA genre in general, it was great to see the characters’ interactions with one another mirror the real life struggles of those similar to Alexandria, including myself.
This was a fantastic book that many young readers are going to enjoy. Fast paced and easy to jump into, the novel does a marvelous job of showcasing the teenage lifestyle many go through in this modern age, and creating relatable characters within a very short time-span that readers will genuinely care about.
