Synopsis
The Jaded Caduceus deals with the trials and tribulations of a trauma surgeon who suffered a severe laceration to the palm of his hand while operating inside an AIDS patient’s chest in 1986. Six weeks later, the surgeon seroconverts, and subsequently, the remainder of his life is destroyed martially, emotionally, professionally, and financially. In the end, the HIV-infected surgeon accepted his plight and calmly awaits his death.
About the Author
Michael Hickey is a board-certified general surgeon and a fellow in the American College of Surgeons. He graduated from Tulane University and Tulane School of Medicine. Dr. Hickey was an associate clinical professor of surgery at the University of California, San Francisco from 1985 to 1999, specializing in trauma surgery. Between 1999 and 2017, Dr. Hickey practiced trauma surgery at a level II trauma center in Fort Worth, Texas. He has published fifty-nine peer-review articles, including several surgical textbook chapters; has lectured extensively on the nutritional management of critically ill trauma and AIDS patients both nationally and internationally; and has participated in the training of hundreds of surgical residents, medical students, and health care providers.
Dr. Hickey retired in 2017 after practicing trauma surgery for nearly thirty years. He now lives in Fort Worth, Texas, and spends his time writing, lecturing, visiting with his grandchildren and playing with his English bulldog, Maggie.
