Kitty Cat, Kitty Cat, Where Are You? is an adorable illustrated children’s book by author Alexander J.S. Warner with pictures by artist Sierra Mon Ann Vidal.
Paging this book, readers first notice very little words, but mostly pictures. The sequence of the book is of a young boy looking for his cat which begins in his bedroom, under the bed. It progresses to the outdoors, then goes into the town, then the state of Texas, the country of the USA, the planet Earth, and even the Milky Way Galaxy and even more so into the Universe! He eventually finds his kitty cat up a tree, which is indicative of how the mind works when you don’t know where something, a cat in this case, is lost, you begin to widen your search.
This book is designed for the youngest of the single-digit years of readers. It does, however, given the limited text, introduce a fair amount of words for developing
vocabularies, along with the definitions. It will introduce concepts including the order of magnitude of size of the various places the boy was looking for his lost kitty cat. Children will learn that a state is larger than a town, and the galaxy is smaller than the Universe, for example.
Placement of the words are within the pictures so it is not a book with reading grammar as the primary lesson. The pictures are appropriately illustrated; as readers are shown the confusion of the young boy and how he expands the places he looks to eventually find his kitty cat.
Overall, this is a charming book which will be grabbed many times and will want to be read at bedtime. Kitty Cat, Kitty Cat, Where Are You? would make a perfect baby shower present, or a gift for an early birthday. It appeals to all children, especially those who love kitty cats! The duo of Warner and Vidal are well honed in skill, both educational and entertaining, along with an interesting theme and a happy ending. I hope to read more from these talented people – perhaps a sequel on how the kitty cat got out of the tree? Did they need to call the fire department?
