Finding one’s path in life is one of the most important things a person can do. For some it’s about family, others business, and others still choose to serve in the military. One path that some choose is that of the Peace Corps. As Joe Kennedy III once said, “The time for me in the Peace Corps was easily the most formative experience I’ve had in my life.” In author H. Lynn Beck’s book Living in Brazil: As A Peace Corps Volunteer and Businessman, the author takes an intimate look at their life in the Peace Corps and how their experiences led them to immerse themselves in a brand new culture.
In this memoir, the author expertly tells the story of their journey of discovery after completing a degree in Vermont, and choosing to travel through the Peace Corps as a volunteer. Leading to an education position in Brazil, the author’s experiences led to travel to various parts of the country and beyond, showcasing a long journey of experiences throughout South America. Part memoir, part travel and 100% real, author H. Lynn Beck showcases a personal journey in which readers will be able to connect with instantly.
This was a very straightforward, easy to get immersed in book that was a fairly quick read overall. The author does a great job of relaying their experience while making the narrative overall relatable and exciting all at once. The thought of experiencing a culture and world outside our own is easily relatable to many readers, and the author’s journey allows readers to feel immersed in those cultures as well. The concept of the book also allows the reader to become familiar and well accustomed to the author, creating a personal connection between reader and author that some memoirs don’t always manage to do.
This is a book for anyone who enjoys memoirs, travel stories and/or has an interest in the Peace Corps and world travel overall. As a fan of memoirs and travel myself, it was easy to get invested in the author’s story, and the author’s voice allowed me to easily visualize the stories being told by the author myself, creating a more personal connection to the book overall.
This was a powerful read that packed quite a punch in a short amount of time. Living In Brazil: As A Peace Corps Volunteer and Businessman by H. Lynn Beck was easy to read, gets the traveler and adventurer in us all inspired, and does a great job of relaying the author’s personal journey in a way that allows the reader to connect with the author themselves. It is a fantastic book that can easily allow the reader to be invested, so be sure to grab your copy today
