In Kay Moon’s Be Careful What You Wish For: A True Story of an American Family’s Five Year Adventure Living on the High Seas, the reader gets to see life from a different view. We are taken through the life of Kay Moon as she takes the unconventional path with her family. We learn that taking chances and living boldly is something doable. I like how the author was honest in her narration. Not every decision she made in her life had positive outcomes, however, it did not deter her from taking major risks and living the extraordinary life she lived. Imagine living in a boat for five years.
After the idea was brought up, Kay Moon and her family planned and went for the adventure that would be their new life. They left their sweet home in Northern Nevada to go and experience life on a 37-foot trimaran sailboat. Kay Moon took her husband and three of their four children on this wonderful adventure. They were practically starting life anew given the lifestyle they would adapt. The most exciting part about Kay Moon’s story is that she tells everything as it was. She describes happy, trying and sad events without holding back and tells of the imperfections; the story is that of fearlessness, risktaking, and not wanting mediocrity.
I appreciated how Kay Moon interacted with her children, teaching them important lessons and being their safe space. Other than being an excellent author, one can tell Kay Moon was a great mother. She kept her house in order and ensured everything ran smoothly all the time. We also get to see how life was in the 1980s. From her narration, one can tell that the 1980s were in many ways better years than present. There are many lessons in the book, one being to never take life for granted. Go out and explore life in the wildest form possible and tell stories of your experiences and account every event.
Life is beautiful, and even more wonderful if you share it with the people that you love. Kay Moon’s idea may have been insane but at the end of it, the memories were worth it. I like the author’s style of narration and description as Kay Moon brings the whole living on the ocean experience to the reader. Homeschooling is no easy feat as Kay took her kids from a public school and made it her responsibility to school them at home- on the sea. The risk paid off in the end.
The author is a great storyteller with an impressive sense of humor. Reading this book may give you the courage to go on a wild escapade or at least enjoy the story from the comfort of your favorite chair. I enjoyed every bit of the story and recommend Be Careful What You Wish For: A True Story of an American Family’s Five Year Adventure Living on the High Seas to readers that appreciate real-life stories and semi-biographical content.
