Johnny: Catching Fire is an insightful novel about two friends who gain supernatural powers, but use them in very different ways. Aaron Allen has written a book that shows how a mixture of fate and choice can impact people’s lives.
Johnny tells the story of Johnny and Danny, two boys who are navigating their complications of attending school. They’re trying to fit in with the other kids, but are bullied for not being as well-off as their classmates. Johnny discovers he has superhuman strength when he finds that he can scare off a mountain lion and often hears the voice of God. Though he teases his bullies with this power, he soon realizes that he should use his powers for good. Alternately, his best friend, Danny also realizes he has powers like telepathy, but uses them for revenge against his bullies. He also delves into witchcraft, which leads him down a dark path. Johnny and Danny soon confront each other and their conflict changes their lives forever.
Johnny: Catching Fire has relatable characters that readers can identify with as they page the novel. Johnny is a sensitive young man who wants to gain power, but is confused about how to wield that power. Though he has exceptional abilities, he wants the life of an ordinary teenager as well. Johnny is a protagonist that readers will like; Danny is a compelling antagonist to Johnny. He is bullied in a similar way to Johnny, but feels lost. With his descent into witchcraft and casting spells, he symbolizes many bullied teenagers who become bent on getting revenge on their tormentors.
Allen’s writing is creative and drives the novel. He subtly conveys the message of faith throughout the novel. Johnny represents the angelic and positive art of human nature, while Danny represents the demonic side of humanity. Though both main characters represent simple concepts of good and evil, they are also complex characters that realize the consequences of their actions.
Johnny would be best for readers who like spiritual stories about young adults. The book would also be great for readers who like books about teenagers who survive being bullied in school. Johnny would make an ideal choice for teen book clubs or young adult church groups.
Johnny: Catching Fire is a book that will resonate with many readers. The novel is short, but effective in conveying its message of love and forgiveness. Aaron Allen has written a book that will have an impact on readers.
