In the world of literature, some of the most action-packed tales tend to start off with a crime. As Napoleon Bonaparte once said, “The infectiousness of crime is like that of the plague.” In author Thomas James Taylor’s novel Trouble In Monarto, an ex-special forces soldier finds himself caught up in a battle he never saw coming.

In a city created by the South-Australian government in the 70’s known as Monarto, a well experienced soldier turned thief finds himself in the possession of money he obtained, and soon is caught in the crossfire as a result. An up and coming criminal with international aspirations is bringing a new drug out into the streets of Monarto, while another experienced local crime boss begins a war with the newcomer. Yet not all is as it seems, and soon the soldier turned thief finds himself fighting to figure out the truth behind the attempts on his own life, as well as the attacks on those around him.

This fast paced, action-packed thriller does an amazing job of drawing the reader in immediately. The skillful knowledge the protagonist brings to the table as the story quickly spins into a tale of the drug trade and secret plots makes the book flow smoothly and the characters relatable. The author’s ability to blend the action with the drama of the painful influence of drugs on people in general and the targets people have on their backs as a result of becoming involved in that life made the novel truly come to life, animating a cast of characters that felt fully fleshed out and memorable.

This is a book for anyone who enjoys a good action and adventure novel, drama and classic action tales involving crime and corruption. As a fan of the genre, it was truly engaging to see the characters facing these dire consequences and forming the new and close-knit bonds which often bring people together in these stress-induced situations. The complex plot is what truly shines through in this novel though, taking readers on a journey which will twist and turn throughout the entirety of the novel.

Overall, this is a fantastic read that is fast paced, well written and action-packed. Memorable characters and high-octane drama make for a one of a kind and engaging read, while the story flows smoothly and creates a narrative that can easily stir up a visual image in the reader’s mind of a crime drama film.
