The beauty of women connecting from different generations is explored in Patchwork: Conversation Between Generations by Carol Wilson-Mack, and it is something which has long been needed in the literary world. When you think about it, women from all walks of life have likely had someone who had a great impact on them; whether those persons were younger or older than them. That is because there is always plenty to learn from each other to help us grow as people, no matter what generation you come from. Which is precisely what we see happen throughout this book with the focus being on a group of women in South Carolina between 1939-1959.

We are first introduced to the matriarchs, Ma Anna and Grandma Carrie — two God-fearing women who are strong and loving to everyone around them. When winter is fast approaching, Ma Anna decides to write a letter to encourage other women she knows to begin quilting to make linens and quilts for their loved ones before the cold hits. This sets off the course of events for the rest of the book. The most beautiful result of this quilting circle of women is that of the support they have for one another. They build each other up, give one another advice, and most importantly, they are there to simply listen whenever is needed during these sessions.

It is wonderful to learn about each individual woman and their predicaments throughout the story, and how the other women come together to help them as best they can. I enjoyed the harmonious nature of their quilting meetings and that they all gained so much more from the experience than purely creating new linens for winter. And for those who are religious, this book will be doubly special with the references to scripture and advice that is given with religious undertones throughout the novel. The Patchwork Organization was a safe haven to talk about these ladies’ lives and their troubles openly – and I believe that is something to be admired and sought after for the women of today.

Patchwork: Conversation Between Generations by Carol Wilson-Mack is a beautiful memoir detailing the lives of many strong women and their support of one another. Readers will become invested in each of their lives and it will likely give you inspiration to have a group of equally strong women in your own life to help build you up when you are down. I strongly recommend you pick up your copy of this wonderful story today!
