Have you ever wanted to look into the past? Dr. Dana Jones has created a device that can do just that with its creation stemming from a hypothesis that dates back to 1940 inventor John Wheeler. This hypothesis is one that suggests that electrons and positrons are derived from a single entity that has the ability to travel through time. Dana and her team have a special mission that revolves around the creation of this unique device which provides them with a rare opportunity to find answers to a long-awaited question. Going back 25,000 years, humans have left the earth, but no one understands why. Now, Dana and her team have a chance to find out that answer, but their discovery is the last thing any of them expected to find and could change everything about their future.
Dana is a brilliant and determined scientist who has created a device that will literally help them answer humanity’s biggest question. The device gives them a chance to understand their present and will impact their future by giving them a way to look into the past. Dana’s life is rooted in this world of science and discovery which is what her
entire life revolves around, and her intellectual need and thirst for understanding is what drives her. She even calls her computer “Pup” which shows how her life revolves within this science world. She has a close dynamic with her team with an easy back and forth between them and ultimately loses herself within her work, as her closest relationship is with Bruce which is described as being the closest relationship someone can give her without bringing the pressures and head/heartache that comes from romantic entanglements.
The plot entirely revolves around the project with Dana and her team putting their focus on the progression of the device and their mission. Bieler weaves a mystery through the science of it rooted in the question of why humanity left earth. The setting is within the future which is an important aspect of the plot and drives the mystery with the balance between the present and the past. Fine detail is given to creating this world with certain terms and words used to give the science fiction setting life with hydroponic gardens, Tobi the captain’s personal AI, drones, and holograms. The plot is based upon a hypothesis that carries forward the storytelling and the drive each of these characters has in finding answers.
Author Steven Bieler’s Full Circle is science-based while also being character-oriented with several characters that are team members and all are working together for a common goal. Bruce is another team member that is entirely driven by his work and his part in their quest for answers though his devotion to science is balanced out by a loving relationship with his husband which grounds him. Bieler weaves several characters within the story but uses various character details to show their dynamic with each other little details such as Dana calling her computer Pup, Bruce being called Ghost because he wanders the halls to think, and Patrick with his ADHD. The science fiction elements are rooted in their scientific research and study, with a touch of mystery about events within the past.
Full Circle is a satisfying science fiction read that revolves around science and research, with a futuristic setting, a mystery about humanity, an exploration of the past and present, and the strive to prove a scientific hypothesis.
