At one point or another in every person’s life, they wonder what kind of legacy they are going to leave behind. Whether it is a legacy that affects the world or a legacy that speaks to one’s family, we all leave behind one form of a legacy or another. As David Lowery once said, “We build our legacy piece by piece, and maybe the whole world will remember you or maybe just a couple of people, but you do what you can to make sure you’re still around after you’re gone.”

In The Life of an Ordinary Man by author Norman Ross, readers are taken on a journey through their life by explaining the author’s life. The book highlights the life and events of the author, from birth in Scotland to meeting the love of his life and raising a family together and more. The author goes into detail to showcase the ups and downs of the life they’ve led, and highlights the ways in which we all leave behind our legacy.

This was a masterfully written, detailed and evenly-paced read. The author does an amazing job of blending detail-oriented history and fact with emotionally-charged storytelling about the author’s life. The book does a great job of painting an image in the reader’s mind of the author’s life playing out, and balancing the story overall. For much of the book readers can feel the memoir genre of storytelling, and yet whenever the author delves into his late wife’s portions of the story, the story seems to shift to biography, giving a unique perspective to a couple’s life.

The Life of an Ordinary Man is the perfect read for those who enjoy memoirs and biographies, intricately detailed looks into another person’s life, stories of family, romance, and of legacy. As a fan of this genre, it was interesting to get a glimpse not only into the author’s life, but also the life of his family. The author writes in a way which makes you feel connected to his story in a personal and unique way.

A heartfelt, honest and creative memoir, The Life of an Ordinary Man by author Norman Ross is a must-read book. The author takes readers through a vividly-detailed and emotional journey, in a well-rounded and gripping memoir which fans of the genre won’t be able to put down.
