One of the great struggles one must make throughout their lives is whether or not to open themselves up to love. Whether it is the love of a parent for their child, a friend’s love or the love shared by two people, the choice which often comes with love is not with who we are attracted to, but who we specifically choose to be with, and whether or not those choices work out. As Orson Welles once said, “We’re born alone, we live alone, we die alone. Only through our love and friendship can we create the illusion for the moment that we’re not alone.”
In author Jasper A. Lee’s Reflections from Behind the Glass, the author takes readers on an emotional and intellectual journey through some of the events of their life. Blending memoir-style storytelling with deep and thoughtful reflections on life and love, the author explores how we often look at events and relationships in our lives through a lens or glass of sorts, and how often the failure to look beyond those glasses can either trap us in a house of mirrors of our own making, or cause us to lose our way entirely.
The author’s words are powerfully written, engaging the reader on several different levels. The clever way the author delves into the memoir portion of this book is well-
conceived, as rather than straightforwardly laying out the events as they happen, the author naturally blends these pivotal moments in their life with deep-thinking looks into grand-scale philosophical moments. From the moments of doubt in ourselves we all share to the image of the person we love most we hold in our minds as opposed to the person they actually are.
This is the perfect book for those who enjoy memoirs and biographies, especially those that delve into philosophy and thoughtful questions about love and life in general. As a fan of the genre, it was refreshing not only to get a glimpse into the author’s life and experiences, but to really delve into the matter of consciousness as a whole and the profound thoughts and experiences we all have but rarely ever acknowledge, something the author has done a marvelous job of.
A gripping, thought-provoking and lengthy yet engaging read, author Jasper A. Lee’s Reflections from Behind the Glass is a must-read memoir. A philosophical journey that examines some of the most gripping questions on love and life many of us face but rarely are able to put into words, the author speaks to the reader in a meaningful way through both emotional and intellectually stimulating passages that won’t soon be forgotten.
