While it is always important to look to the past and learn from one’s mistakes, the only true way forward for many is to focus on the future, and how to get there. The future is often the pinnacle of hope, where the possibilities of a brighter tomorrow often loom for the majority of people. As former US President Barack Obama once said, “The future rewards those who press on. I don’t have time to feel sorry for myself. I don’t have time to complain. I’m going to press on.”

In author Hendrik Sven Weller’s Forward To The Future, the author tackles politics, economics and society as a whole through the lens of the COVID-19 Pandemic. Illustrating the struggles and failing ideologies that have been seen in the author’s home of Ontario, Canada in the midst of this pandemic, the book explores an analysis of the key issues facing our world today, and how the future resides not in profits or Capitalism, but within people and what the author has dubbed “Cooperatism”.

A powerful read, the author immediately distinguishes themselves from other books by making it clear this is not a book that relies on scholarly pursuits, but instead focuses on the opinions of the author and at times others. Instead of keying in on figures, graphs and statistics exclusively, the author pinpoints the beating heart of the issues facing our world in the midst of a global pandemic. One of the book’s biggest highlights was a section titled “The Gods That Failed Us”, in which the author examines key ideologies that have dominated our way of life and thinking for far too long, from Capitalism and Conservatism to the United States as a whole and the Suppression of China and the Far East entirely. This showcases the authors ability to hit the key points that are the problems of our world in an effort to break the norm and find new ways of tackling these ongoing challenges, especially after this pandemic has turned everything upside down.

This book is the perfect read for fans of non-fiction, opinion based and political and philosophically driven dialogues meant to challenge societal norms and tackle key issues plaguing our world. As an American citizen who has become frustrated by the moral failings of my nation over the years, it was refreshing to get this outside perspective on how the United States has influenced so much in the world, and how we need to break this tradition of not questioning the nation’s actions on a global scale. In fact, one key thing the author touched on in this book was the need for global, multi-national solutions to these problems, which is something I’ve felt for a long time now.

An intellectually driven, moral and philosophical book, author Hendrik Sven Weller’s Forward To The Future is a must-read for anyone looking to dive head-first into the modern problems facing our planet and the steps needed to make these corrections. While an opinion-driven non-fiction read, the book does a great job of highlighting the narrow-minded approaches our world has been privy to and the increase in ignorance and anger, and the need to face these challenges united and not separate.
