There has been plenty of speculation both in pop culture and scientific circles of how overcrowding of our world would affect us all in the long-term. In some ways, it already has with global warming, for instance. But what would happen if suddenly all females of the world just stopped falling pregnant with no explanation as to why? And what would the connection be amongst them? This is the fictional topic we read about in Peter Breally’s debut novel, Demography Day.

Peter Breally is an Australian-native who, after working in the construction industry for years, has since retired and subsequently become a writer. Now, he has published his

first full-length work in Demography Day and immediately you can see the true talent this author has for the craft. In this book, we meet Sonya who is a young, wide-eyed journalist who is expecting her first child. While beginning her prenatal classes, she learns she is the last one to sign up and no other pregnant mother has for two weeks. This puzzles her so she takes note of it. But when she learns the same thing is occurring in other cities, and later that it is also happening in other countries, that is when a story forms in her head. One that is troubling yet intriguing and she knows she cannot just sit on this.

The story she inevitably writes for her newspaper “rocks the world to its core” and causes her to go on a journey that greatly changes the course of her personal life. At the core of this story, we learn of the damaging effects of overpopulation and how it in turn causes problems in species decline and cultural values. This is what the author hopes the audience will pick up on, which I most certainly did when reading this tale. From the start of the story, you are sucked into it with no hesitation, instantly wondering where it’s going and why these things are happening across the globe. It will send you on a rollercoaster ride of emotions which is the mark of a truly great author.

I personally felt as though I had traveled to the Australian coast myself thanks to Breally’s descriptive writing style. And until you reach that very last page, you will be on the edge of your seat, wondering what is going to happen next and what the consequences of it all will be on the world’s population as well as Sonya. I couldn’t put this one down and I am certain that anyone who reads this will feel the same. Pick up your copy of Demography Day by Peter Breally today!
