Terry Willoughby made a split-second decision to buy a home in a city she was passing through, and life changed from that moment forward. In L. B. Robbins’ The Consultant in Sea Isle City, we follow the adventures which come her way with that one choice.
Driving through Cape May, this former New Yorker passed by a house and her heart told her to stop. After purchasing it right then and there, she took on a new life – in many ways. The first of which was her fiancé leaving her there all by herself. And from there it continued to get interesting. A series of jobs she wasn’t sure she was qualified for at first and question over who actually owned the piece of land make for an interesting story, full of little plot twists. Eventually, we see the return of said fiancé coming back into her life.
This story to me is one of consequences that making a decision can cause. Terry herself calls the day she bought the house to be the fatal trip. While some things were unexpected and unwanted, some good also came. It made me ponder changes I have made or want to make in my life and where those have led me (or possible might lead me). Because of Terry’s courage to try the unknown, I also found that to be what I would consider a great adventure.
As for the reading, I found some of the phrases, particularly in the beginning, to be quite beautiful and well written. The book is short enough to read in one setting and I liked that it wasn’t totally obvious where the story was going to end up. There were just enough characters to make it interesting but not too many to keep track of. Overall, I found the story to be entertaining and I would recommend The Consultant in Sea Isle City to others.
