A beautiful and wonderful thing about our world is the vast number of different cultures that make up our planet. From the skies above the United States – to the life lurking under the coldest depths of the Mariana Trench – to the different groups of people and cultures dominating each continent, there are a multitude of cultures and life in general to admire to fully immerse ourselves into. One way of doing this is by learning to translate, or even speak languages other than the one we are born with. As writer Italo Calvino once said, “Without translation, I would be limited to the borders of my own country. The translator is my most important ally. He introduces me to the world.”
In author Bunleang Kors’s English-Khmer Phrases Medical Dictionary: English – Khmer (English and Khmer Edition), the author gives a detailed, self-explanatory guide on learning medical phrases and terms in both English and Khmer, the language of Cambodia, in an effort to help anyone learning to speak either language or at least hoping to have an understanding of others around them to fully grasp what is being said to them in a medical situation.
This is a detailed and educational read. The author does an excellent job of keeping a descriptive and organized record of each phrase and term that someone working in the medical field would need to know in either culture. The interesting thing I think defines the specialness of this book exudes is how the author wrote this book to not only benefit anyone in Cambodia to be able to understand and possibly even speak or write English, but to allow anyone in the medical profession coming into Cambodia or into a situation involving a Cambodian colleague or patient to be able to work with them to solve the problems facing them and get to the bottom of each situation a lot more quickly.
A guide and book like this is the perfect read for non-fiction readers, especially those which are either in the medical field, or need to have a working understanding of either language to be able to work in that field. As a reader who values learning and discovering new things in our world, I’m always fascinated with the study of other languages , and how those in a field such as the medical profession work along with others around the world through a language barrier; especially during the days of this pandemic.
Informative, thought-provoking, and engaging, author Bunleang Kors’s English-Khmer Phrases Medical Dictionary: English – Khmer (English and Khmer Edition) is a must- read medical dictionary and translation read for both English and Khmer-speaking people. The perfect mesh of two cultures in an important field such as this, this book was perfectly written and does a great job of teaching those who need to understand either language to work with their fellow medical professionals in a much more efficient way.
