I am truly impressed with the sequence of questions, illustrations, and statements comprising author Cindy Moynes’ children’s book titled Helping You Through A Loss: How To Help Share Your Feelings.
Created out of a need the author found necessary due to the loss of one of her own family members, Cindy Moynes set out to help explain to youngsters just what happens when someone who was loved by them, such as a Grandparent, dies. Yes, it is hard to explain the loss, and how they will never “see” their loved one again.
Using a generous amount of space within the book to allow for readers to draw in elements of their relationship and express their feelings within the defined boxes, this book becomes more than just a coloring book; actually, it is a workbook to aid in the healing process of getting over such a loss. The step-by-step depiction of the circumstances revolving around the death of a family member, including the funeral and burial in the cemetery, takes the mystery out of the epic moments for all family members – especially the youngest of the group. I thought the lesson of the Grandparent’s death being not due to anything the child has done, and thus relieving any guilt which may have been associated with the passing, is an excellent comment pre-empting the complications many develop after such an event occurs.
The drawings are sad, yes, because this is a sad time in the lives of many. Noticing the book is available in both softcover and electronic versions, I strongly recommend the paper version so readers can actually participate in the lesson structure the author has prescribed.
Helping You Through A Loss is a book designed for a specific purpose, and at some time or another, every child will have to go through the healing process overcoming the loss of a loved one. It would be best to have this helpful guide to enable youngsters to better cope with a loss in a strong, healthy and unambiguous way, making Helping You Through A Loss being a must-have book for all family libraries.
