When we speak of how technology has advanced and grown over the years, people tend to only look upon the flashy, more recent advances in tech, from smart phones and computer tablets to AR gaming and the recently announced Metaverse. Yet technology isn’t always referring to modern advances, but societal technology as a whole. One of the biggest foundations for our modern society’s understanding of technology as a whole developed through the use of farming. Farming in rural areas of a nation led many to develop larger agricultural advances and from there great metropolises. As Tad Williams once said, “Every major technological step forward has profoundly changed human society – that’s how we know they’re major, even if we don’t always realize it at the time. Farming created cities. Writing, followed eventually by printing, vastly increased the preservation and transmission of cultural information across time and space.”
In author Richard Stuckey’s Embracing Life: With Twists and Turns, one man’s life and his work to bring science and technological advancements into the farming scene take center stage. The author recounts their life, from the years of their grandparents in the 19th century in an Agrarian society to life in Laos teaching students and even the job that launched him into the research and science behind new technologies for wheat production and harvesting amongst farmers. Through detailed and personal stories, the reader is given an up-close look into the author’s storied and captivating life.
The author did such a brilliant job of detailing and bringing his experiences to life, and bringing both a sense of professionalism and personality to the narrative he was telling. The attention and relatability the author brought to older audiences was great to see, as was the history going on around the author as they went about their life. The lengthy read the author provided did an amazing job of delving into the author’s life perfectly, and created an image in the readers’ minds of what life was like for the author’s years of traveling and work.
This is the perfect read for those who enjoy memoirs and biographies, especially those that involve travel, education, and the advancements of science and technology in the field of agriculture and farming in particular. As a fan of memoirs and biographies, I found the author’s story to be compelling and unique, taking on a rarely talked about topic and corner of the world that often serves as the foundation of our society as a whole. The experiences and personal touch the author put on the narrative made it that much more entertaining to delve into.
Thoughtful, engaging, and fascinating to read, author Richard Stuckey’s Embracing Life: With Twists and Turns is a must-read biography and memoir. The honest and personal way the author was able to incorporate the history of the world around him and the facts of his life while maintaining an interactive and fun tone of voice made this such a delight to read.
