Sometimes in order to understand our present, we need to look to the past. The world is full of conflict, especially in our present time, and some of the bloodiest and most brutal battles occurring are taking place in the Middle East. Yet despite the conflicts taking place and how horrible the violence is, it is not something new to this region of the world. The Middle East was once home to the great Egyptian Kingdoms, a diverse world which was the capitol of wealth and military might during that era of time. Yet violence and war was rampant during that time as well.
In author Lilian Nirupa’s Lizla, the Daughter of Isis, the author delves deeper into this era of history through a fictional and magical account of a young princess gifted with the power of a psychic who must grow her powers and gifts of both spiritual and mental realms to help her people. Through her coming-of-age story, the young leader must commune with the goddess Isis and go on a journey to fully accept and understand her gifts to become the leader she was destined to be.
The author did a truly spectacular job of finding just the right balance between fictional storytelling and historical accuracy. The fictional version of Ancient Egypt not only speaks to the diverse culture which existed within this time period, but of how spirituality and power played just as big of a role in their society as it does in our modern world. The exploration of ancient mythology and spirituality was great to see brought to life through the protagonists’ adventures, as it not only spoke to the culture of that era but also added a sense of magic and thoughtfulness to the grand nature of the narrative. The use of the Isis mythos was especially interesting, for long before modern-day terror groups began to utilize the name of Isis for their own means, the goddess was the symbol of womanhood and magic, as well as death and rebirth, and was integral to the Osiris and Set mythos as well.
This is the perfect read for those who enjoy historical fiction, especially those which include a spiritual and magical nature that infuses a culture’s mythos so seamlessly into the narrative. As a fan of historical fiction and mythology, especially Egyptian mythology, I found myself instantly transported and enthralled with this narrative, and the author’s ability to take a fictional account of an ancient kingdom and somehow relate it to a person’s ability to really look within themselves to find a means of reflection on their life was profoundly felt.
Captivating, entertaining, and heartfelt, author Lilian Nirupa’s Lizla, The Daughter of Isis is a must-read historical fiction genre novel. The cohesive way the author brings together rich characters, a dash of romance and adventure, emotional spiritual and cultural studies, and a captivating deep-dive into mythology made this narrative just fly by, and readers will be hard pressed to put down this one of a kind and unique story of discovering who we are and what our true strength is in the face of adversity.
