Fairies and Sorcery is an amusing book that has absorbing tales and an engaging plot. The first feature I enjoyed about this book is the character formation and the diversity of its characters. Author Donald R. Richter knew to incorporate characters of all forms to make the action more exciting. Here you meet fairies, humans, and creatures of all nature. One thing every reader learns when reading the book is to appreciate the differences everyone has. Even among the same species, individual creatures have unlike traits, which bring about the collective beauty in the universe. Donald R. Richter’s book is an easy and entertaining book, and also thought provoking while at it.
We follow the story of fairies and men who run different units in the Universe. This red fairy is a slave of a blue fairy. When the green fairy comes to Earth to find her cousin, a green fairy that was captured, she becomes devastated and plans to save her. Enslaving her alongside the red fairy. Enter Jack, a wise and fairly old man who rescues the situation by annihilating the blue fairy. As expected, this is good news to the red and green fairies, making Jack a savior of sorts. Red fairy then befriends him, and invites him to their world. I like how the different creatures learned how to get along even with their differences. Jack learns some magic from the fairies, while he shows them crucial survival lessons.
Meanwhile Merlin, the immortal man, is a sorcerer who is revered and well-regarded. Donald R. Richter’s characters have these inimitable features and traits which makes the reader enjoy them straight away. Merlin, for instance, has lived for 10,000 years and knows the nitty-gritty of the sorcerer’s world; a friend you would want to keep by your side for protection. I like Merlin as a character, not just because of his complex traits, but also because he is easygoing. Jack becomes Merlin’s apprentice and this is where the reader fully dives into the dark world and the universe of magic. How would you like to learn about hypnosis? I love that the author makes the reader understand the science of hypnosis through the character Jack, as Jack learns about this skill from the all-knowing John.
Fairies and Sorcery will make you live in utopia for a moment. Jack’s life gets more interesting after he gets more skills. Did his elimination of the blue fairy create a potential fiction with other parties? Will he assist Merlin bring back his wife in a normal state? Can he trust those close to him, even his love interests? How many fairies can he rescue? Is sorcery a blessing or a curse for him? Dive into the life of Jack and enjoy every fantasy moment as you learn of otherworldly portals and how they operate in this masterpiece by Donald R. Richter. This book is electrifying, and a must-read for lovers of fantasy, sorcery, and supernatural stories.
