One of life’s greatest hurdles to make on a personal level is when a child realizes their parents are people too, and they have their own lives and secrets which they never reveal to their children. Making the effort to understand their parents and realize they are so much more than what they present to their children, including a history that adds so much more depth to their lives, is a milestone in every person’s life.
Getting the chance to understand a person’s parents more is the driving force behind author Mic Lowther’s What Mom & Dad Never Told Us, the third book in the Moorehouse Trilogy. The story follows the final journey for siblings Caroline, David, and Juliana, as they continue to put the pieces together of their parents’ long lost history. After discovering their quiet, wealthy lawyer father had written a book of stories, they begin investigating what drove him to do so, and discover a hidden past for their mother which will change their understanding of their parents altogether, as well as what it means for their future.
A truly relatable story, the author does a remarkable job of capturing the complex family dynamics that are at play between these characters. Anyone who has ever had to experience loss, especially loss of a loved one, will see the drive and need which comes with having to know the truth about their loved ones when that information comes to light. Not only does this mystery bring the siblings together, but it shows the ways in which they are able to reconnect with their parents, adding an emotional depth to the writing which will stay with readers. The fast pacing of the story and the imagery found in the author’s writing style allowed these characters to feel real and jump right off the page.
Anyone who is a fan of genre fiction storytelling, especially those involving family dynamics, sibling relationships and parenting in general, will feel themselves called to the trilogy and this third book in particular. The shocking revelations these siblings endure as they go further and further into their parents’ hidden lives and the relatability of their struggles and triumphs, especially the emotional final chapters, will resonate with many readers, and the balance of humor and rivalry found in the dialogue between these siblings will instantly draw in readers. The emotional yet powerful story will strike a familiar chord with so many, and the way this story shows how people can continue to connect with those no longer with them will resonate greatly.
