Savannah is a young teenager fresh out of high school who got the trip of a lifetime. Follow Savannah as she journeys throughout Greece and Crete with her aunt and uncle. Nicki Collins Geigert is a travel writer and has documented Savannah’s odyssey through Greece and Crete’s culture, food and history. Each day is spent hiking, climbing, swimming and running through the ancient ruins. Through this book Savannah and Nicki invite readers to go on an adventure with them and experience her first international odyssey.
The book opens with details about the trip, where they are going, why and some of the preparations needed prior to embarking on this adventure. The book details a lot of the things the group experienced throughout their trip including some of the food they got to sample and things they learned along the way. The way the book is set up makes it feel like the reader is simply looking through a family scrapbook, which makes it feel so much more familiar and comfortable; almost as if you are listening to your aunt, uncle and cousin describe their adventure. The pictures are beautiful and paint Greece and Crete in a lovely manner. You may end up wanting to book your own odyssey through these countries!
A Girl’s Greek Odyssey is very informative as author Nicki Collins Geigert mixes personal encounters with history. Doing this, she has created something which is entertaining, interesting and exciting to read. As you are reading this book; it does not feel as if you are reading a text book or even a travel guide about Greece and Crete. She includes some information one may not find in a history book or that some travel guides might miss mentioning; such as the story about Nestor and Demetrius. Nicki Collins Geigert includes things one may learn only if they visit a location.
A Girl’s Greek Odyssey is something any travel buff, history buff, or even a memoir lover would enjoy. It truly made me want to add Greece to my ever-growing list of places to visit. If you enjoy travel, history, personal accounts, or a good read check out this book.
