Young love can be an exhilarating feeling. It also can be terrifying in other ways, which is a big part of what we end up exploring in J.S. Wilson’s novel A Hundred Honeymoons. The thing is, we have all been through similar situations that these two young lovers find themselves in — for them, during the ’60s in San Luis Obispo, California. Teenagers dealing with raging hormones and mood swings galore only enhances the heady feeling of falling in love for the first time. That is precisely what we touch upon in this romantic drama set in a small town full of drama and interesting characters.
This tale focuses on two teenagers, Sally and Todd. As they’re growing up in their idyllic neighborhood complete with modest homes and all-American families, they find themselves drawn to one another. All throughout the novel, we follow them and their journeys, and most importantly, their love story with its many obstacles and pitfalls as well as its high points. It is a titillating and at times, racy read, that will surely capture the attention of its audience from the very first page and leave them enraptured in the story until they reach the final line.
What I also enjoyed about this novel is the descriptive nature of not just the enthralling characters but the town itself. From the venues and beaches and streets that these two found themselves in during their time as a couple, it really felt as though you yourself were thrown into this story right along with them. As if you were experiencing your own youth once again in this California town. That is not always an easy feat to accomplish but author J.S. Wilson does so seamlessly. More so, you are taken back to a different time in the 1960s where peace and love were meant to overcome all. In the midst of it all are Sally and Todd who are just two young teenagers ready to experience everything life has to offer them.
This is a fast-paced read with intriguing dialogue that keeps the story moving and lets the reader dive headfirst into this world the author has created. The way these flawed characters are portrayed really shows the true talent of J.S. Wilson and I can only hope he continues to write more stories like this. I highly recommend you get your own copy of A Hundred Honeymoons by J.S. Wilson today. It is a book you will have a hard time putting down, trust me.
