A Work Day the Firefighter Way, written by who goes by the pen name The Firefighter Writer is a beautifully illustrated children’s book providing a rather in-depth peek into the firehouse, the equipment, and the tasks of firefighters.
What is seen in this format is a very unique perspective on the daily life of a firefighter. It brings together many of the background activities of living and working in a firehouse; from keeping all of the equipment ready as well as the tasks of staying in the firehouse on a 24 hours emergency basis – because one never knows when an alarm will come in and everyone has to be ready in a moment’s notice. I found the attention to detail to be excellently conveyed with a smart rhyme, bringing into the awareness of readers the many details necessary to support the emergency call when it comes in.
Then the alarm comes in, and a house is on fire. The firefighters respond to the burning building and in this case a boy is trapped inside. As the brave firefighters prepare to rescue the boy, readers will get a behind-the-scene scenario of how much attention to safety goes into the rescue effort. The ultimate life-saving rescue makes it worthwhile for all of the preparation, as readers will get a fulfilled feeling from these short pages of text which provide so much information.
The rhyming is done with an intelligent degree of wordsmithing making this a very enjoyable book to read, and will become a welcome addition to young children’s libraries. Especially those boys and girls who have the strength and fortitude to become first responders once they grow up. A Work Day the Firefighter Way might just be the inspirational book which may change the lives of many readers; to become modern day heroes and heroines and ultimately save lives.
