Pacific Book Review

All Votes Matter is a no-nonsense look at the American voting system the way it is now, how it has looked in the past, and the author’s ideas on how to make every voice heard in elections. The book seems dry, and sometimes it is with many statistics involved, but that doesn’t mean it is not an interesting read. If you are interested in expanding your boundaries and challenging your thoughts, you will want to know more about All Votes Matter.

The concepts brought forth in this book are interesting, especially if you have an interest in civics. The idea of Equal Voice Voting or EVV is presented clearly and efficiently, and the argument is a compelling one. If you are a person who loves statistics, there is no shortage of them in this book; if you are not, don’t be afraid, author Jerry Spriggs does a great job breaking down those numbers in laymen’s terms.

Mr. Spriggs mentions early on that All Votes Matter is an updated version of earlier works which shows in a polished piece. One of the many fun characteristics of this book is that it was made to be linear, but you can hop around from chapter to chapter without being lost — this also makes it great when you want to revisit the book for review. One part, in particular, that stood out to me in the book is Mr. Spriggs’s admission that adopting EVV will be an uphill battle but also laying out how and why it is essential to contact your representatives if it is ever to be enacted.

Even though this book is data-heavy, it is still a relatively quick read. All Votes Matter is an excellent read if for nothing more than to challenge your ideas of the status quo and remind us that there is more than one way to do something. It will be interesting to see if any of these ideas are ever adopted and how they would change the election process in the US.
