Are You Free Enough? is the story of two people who embark on a passionate love affair that is used to explore the depths of relationships as theirs unfolds with passion and an all-consuming connection. Author Verona Willis-Brown weaves an elegant prose style into a relationship analysis which breaks apart the idea of love and romance. The romantic relationship explored between this couple is broken down with snippets of advice which acts as brief breaks during their relationship’s progression. Through these two people, Willis-Brown explores the idea of exploring one’s freedom in terms of relationships and emotions, written in the realm of passion and love.
Willis-Brown places a couple at the center of this love exploration which delves into their love affair from beginning to end. A psychological and thought-provoking approach is taken to delve into the emotional and physical connection between these two people. Are You Free Enough? consists of only a few lines of dialogue between the couple and contains no other characters. The relationship is viewed from a third person perspective which contributes to the analytical and advice-giving style seen throughout. Despite the structure of the book, both characters come across as full-fledged and well-rounded people with wants and desires. Neither is provided with a name which puts them into position as study types while the emotional depth allows for both to be related to. WillisBrown provides an honest sense of getting to know them, specifically the woman who is used on as a personal voice to explore an emotional journey from coming out of a bad relationship to taking a chance on this new pursuit.
Several questions regarding freedom are pondered through this evolution of a relationship from a sweet romance to a passionate affair. Willis-Brown questions the place of freedom in relationships through this woman’s journey via her emotional state being single to entering into this relationship that slowly consumes her as she becomes more entranced with him and their relationship. The tone slowly evolves throughout as their relationship starts as more akin to a romantic comedy meet-cute with two people trying to form a connection as the guy blunders about trying to impress the beautiful woman. Then the relationship slowly ignites into a passionate affair that’s full of the sizzling chemistry between two people who can’t get enough of each other.
The dynamic between them is used by Willis-Brown to explore the pure emotions two people can have for each other and the memories two people can create. Most of the advice strives for women to seek something more positive with love and taking chances which are encouraged to put toward embracing their relationships. Willis-Brown incorporates a few poems at the end which continue the same themes of love hit upon throughout and uses the same passionate style. Each poem is aimed at the specific experience and specifically ties back to other advice Willis-Brown offers throughout the course of the book. Are You Free Enough? is aimed primarily at women seeking to explore more of themselves both individually and in their relationships, or for those looking for a passionate read and craving an honest voice on the topic of romance.
