Right now in America, there is plenty of divisiveness to go around. No matter what side of the fence you are on, we can all agree that it has become more and more difficult to look at a different perspective than our own, let alone get along. While I do understand why it is so difficult for those who have different beliefs to see eye to eye, it is still important to take a step back and look at someone else’s perspective on things — no matter how hard it may seem at the time. For instance, in Around The World In (More Than) 80 Days: Discovering What Makes America Great And Why We Must Fight To Save It by Larry Alex Taunton, I was presented with a different viewpoint than my own typical one and it was rather fascinating.
In this book, Taunton examines how America is perceived by the world — as well as the “left” — and why those who find America to be too problematic are actually wrong in their assumption. I’ll be honest in saying that while I do not think America itself is a terrible country, I am not a conservative person by nature. However, reading this book definitely gave me a look into the world – and the mind — of a conservative, religious man and the way he sees the world before him. It was refreshing to see things through a new lens and gave me a chance to understand someone else’s opinion other than my own.
Taunton goes so far as to travel to many different areas of the world to prove why America, in fact, is a truly great country to live in and should not be touted as one of the worst to call your home. He proceeds to bring a fresh take on this intense, and at times controversial, subject matter while still informing his readers of facts they likely were unaware of that are important to this story. It is evident that Taunton is a fantastic writer with a very specific point-of-view but the way he makes his arguments is done so in a way which is informative and aids his audience in learning more about the modern world and how the more conservative right-wing side of the country views things.
All in all, this is a book that will be a page-turner for both the conservative crowd as well as the left side of America who might want a sneak a peek into a world they rarely see before them. I recommend reading this book, whichever side you find yourself on, so you can see how you feel about America and its inherent greatness.
