In life, there are often moments when a person will have to decide whether or not to do what they have been led to believe is the right thing, and if it really is what it appears to be. Far more often than not, a person will find themselves faced with a challenge or a decision that appears to be one thing on paper, and yet in reality is far more complex and crucial to understand than previously thought. This can also impact far more than just the person in question, as others can be caught in the crosshairs and find their lives impacted by another’s decision.

This concept is explored in a visceral way in author Laurn Smith’s Assisted Suicide or Murder?: Preston Bourne Saga Begins. The story follows Preston, a chemical engineer with an extensive military background in the Marine Corp, who learned the skills needed for recon missions, special forces training, and even sniper training, sought a new life for himself after his growing business became inadvertently tied to the death of a young plant worker. Building his new life and hoping to find redemption, Preston is recruited to help participate in an “assisted suicide.” However, with the help of a new love interest in his life, he soon realizes the mission he was given is far more complex than he thought, and when he fears suspicion may fall on him for a murder plot, he must work to stop the conspiracy before it’s too late.

The author does an incredible job of immediately setting the tone for an atmospheric suspense thriller in this story. The setup of the conspiracy players and their actions early on in the book set the stage for Preston and his adversities heading towards him. The world-building was really spot on here, taking the time to make the reader feel immersed into Preston’s life and history through a great blend of imagery in the author’s writing and rich character development for both Preston and the supporting players. The way the author was able to allude to the protagonist’s history while also keeping readers in the present moment in the story and invested in Preston’s evolution as a character was phenomenal to see, as it established both an emotional and mental connection with the protagonist that elevated the adrenaline-fueled narrative.

This is the perfect read for those who enjoy fictional narratives, especially those that delve into the suspense thriller genre and have a splash of romance to help elevate the characters and their shared journey. The relationship between Preston and Samantha is a great respite from the heart-pumping action and mysterious plot developments that keep Preston in the height of danger.

Heartfelt, entertaining, and thoughtfully written, author Laurn Smith’s Assisted Suicide or Murder?: Preston Bourne Saga Begins is a must-read action and suspense thriller and romance novel. The twists and turns the narrative takes and the captivating character development will keep readers on the edge of their seats as the conspiracy spirals out of control and a new and down to Earth action hero is born.
