Margaret Smolik interview questions
PBR: You write so well about the harrowing life in Austria during World War II. Was is painful or cathartic to relieve those memories? Writing th0se memoir was not painful. It gave me an opportunity to think about my past and get input from family about things I forgot or did not know. I value my background and the person I have become.
PBR: You write about your immigrating to America in the 1950’s. What was the biggest surprise about the US to you? I was only nine years old when we came to America. I grew up accepting life and doing my best. It was interesting to learn another language and get to know other children, play their games, and learn about special days like Valentines Day and Thanksgiving.
PBR: What advice would you give to current immigrants to America? My family was not shunned in any way because we were immigrants. Only once were we mistreated. My experience is that Americans accept immigrants and treat them well. My suggestion is to adjust to American society quickly but also continue to value one’s background.
PBR: Which authors inspired your writing? Jennifer Wilson, Running Away to Home; Henry Nouwen; Ron Rolheiser
PBR: What do you want readers to get the most from reading Like a Haystack? Acceptance and respect for others is essential. Treat others fairly and welcome immigrants and refugees. It is the way of peace. Work hard to achieve your dreams.
