Synopsis
We have all heard the expression taking time to “stop and smell the roses.” For one curious little bee, this phrase translates into taking as much time as possible to stop to smell all of the flowers in the garden.
Through the author’s enchanting illustrations, Phoebe Bee brings us into the summer world of the gray house garden, where some bees take their job more seriously than others. In this special garden, Phoebe Bee learns about the power of kindness, tolerance, and the importance of being yourself.
About the Author
Arlene Rita Borromeo spent her early years in Rhode Island attending Saturday art classes at the Rhode Island School of Design. By the time she had completed her BFA in Illustration from Massachusetts College of Art, she was married and expecting her first child. One day her son asked her, “Mommy, why does your artwork always turn out better than mine?” Worried that she might stifle his creativity, Arlene temporarily set her artwork aside and focused more on her family, cooking, baking, home décor, and gardening.
In fact, in the garden Arlene not only overcame her long-time fear of bees, but saw them as gentle and industrious little creatures. They sparked her imagination to dream up little Phoebe, who spends her days smelling the flowers.
As Arlene’s children grew, she taught college courses, did some modeling, and coordinated a segment on artistically gifted children for local CBS and NBC affiliate stations. She completed a graduate degree in Broadcast Journalism from Emerson College and returned to writing and illustrating.
