About the Author
I was born in 1949, not too long after the end of World War II. My mother lived in New York City where she met my father, who was serving on a U.S. Navy destroyer escort in the Atlantic. I grew up in and around New York City and Washington, D.C. When I graduated from high school in 1968 in Springfield, VA, I enlisted in the Navy. After I was separated from active duty in 1972, I went to the University of Missouri-Columbia, which was about as far away from the ocean as I could get. I graduated in 1976 with a Bachelor of Journalism and spent the next 41 years as a reporter and editor at small and medium sized newspapers in six states, ending up in Florida. I am a storyteller but, like my fellow journalists, the stories I told were based on fact. And so is “Holocaust’s Child.” After I retired in 2017, my wife, Amy, drafted me to help write this book. It was her long-held dream to help preserve the memory and history of the Holocaust. She’s a retired teacher, who worked with children and other teachers for 37 years. She was passionate about her work then and she is passionate about teaching and preserving the memory of the Holocaust. It is a passion I share. This book is a product of that passion. It is our way of honoring those who survived and the memory of those who died. We created a book which captures not just the agony of ten children who defied the odds to survive but also tells of their lives before the Holocaust and how they rebuilt their lives afterwards. In short, these are stories of tragedy, survival and triumph. These are stories about the will to live in the face of evil.
