At first glance, a haiku poetry book about golf seems like a strange team, but it actually makes for a perfect fit. Paul J. Zingg’s Be the Pine, Be the Ball: Haiku Reflections on the World of Golf perfectly merges the beauty of language, the beauty of form, and the beauty of the natural world.
The book contains 72 haiku poems and essay reflections. The number is specially chosen as representing the most common number of strokes in a par round of golf, as well as for its significance in science and math. (Plus, the author also noted the number matched his age.) In the introduction, Zingg carefully explains the connection between two such opposite topics, poetry and sports. The examination connects the history of haiku and golf and draws links between them, showing that golf is closer to an art form than many might believe.
The book is divided into three sections. The first section, “Landscape and Memory” contains haiku about the history of golf and golfing landscapes around the world. In “People and Places,” the author references specific courses and key people in the golfing world. Finally, “Discovery and Meaning” describes golf as a pathway to self-discovery.
The book is more than simply a collection of haiku poetry about the topic of golf. Instead, each poem is followed by a reflective essay by the author explaining his thoughts on the creation of the poem. While the poetry is truly beautiful, the essays are also filled with an incredible use of language to show readers the true beauty in the game of golf. The poet reflects on amazing golf courses around the world, focusing on natural aspects and scenic spots. There are also fascinating tidbits of golf history and lore, and many quotes from golf professionals explaining why a good game of golf is truly a Zen experience.
Paul J. Zingg’s Be the Pine, Be the Ball: Haiku Reflections on the World of Golf would be the perfect gift for serious golfers and those who just enjoy playing golf. However, to say that this is only a book for sports-minded individuals would be selling it short. The author has a masterful control of language and the poetry is exactly what a haiku should be—a celebration of nature and the power of reflection. It would even be a great read for those who don’t necessarily like sports or poetry, but love reading about the natural world. Overall, it was a peaceful and encouraging read, one that caused this reader to reflect more on the natural world surrounding me and one that really has caused a new appreciation for a previously unappreciated sport.
