In every children’s book worth its merits, there needs to be a very valuable lesson that the young audience will learn and be able to take with them in their own lives. At least, that is what we all hope they gain from the experience along with stimulating their minds and making them think outside the box. In Big Bully Bob by author Cynthia Gadson, that is precisely what I imagine the young children reading this book will get out of it; and they will enjoy every minute of it.
In this book, we meet a young boy named Bob who believes if he bullies those around him, he will receive attention and somehow gain friendships. The thing is, while he may receive attention, it is of the negative variety and doesn’t exactly make him popular for the right reasons amongst his peers. Once Bob comes to the unfortunate realization no one really wants to be around him because of his bullying antics, he becomes withdrawn and lonely and even has trouble being productive unlike most children his age. It is a tough pill to swallow for Bob, but it forces him to learn a much-needed and inevitable lesson. All in all, this story will help any child — whether they are the bullied or the bully.
This book is suitable for ages 1 and up and therefore will be a great read for many age groups to learn the valuable lesson of what can happen if you bully other children, and better yet, why it’s a good thing if your child already is not exhibiting such behavior. The illustrations detail the story laid out before us perfectly and will certainly help younger children follow along with the story with ease. I feel this is a perfect bedtime read for children of all ages and teaches kids to do the right thing and not pick on those around you just for recognition of some sort.
Seeing Bob’s transformation over the course of the book was a heartwarming depiction of good overcoming bad within one’s self. It is something that not only children can relate to, but their parents as well, I’m sure. With the high importance of preventing bullying from happening, this book will truly hit home for many audiences for years to come.
