When reading a children’s book to a child, there is certainly specific elements you wish for the book to have to make it a positive reading experience for them; such as a wonderful plot that teaches an important lesson by the story’s climax. There’s also the illustrations needing to be beautiful and whimsical to keep the child’s focus fully on the story unfolding before them. And finally, if it has a proper dose of education about a subject directly connected to the tale’s main plot, you know you’ve found the ultimate winner. That is precisely what you get, and so much more, when reading Big Feet, the Story by Mike Rubel.
We are first introduced at the beginning of this tale to the story’s protagonist, Guruto, a young Giraffe who was born with exceptionally large feet. They are so large that this characteristic of his actually gets him banished from his herd due to the fact he is far too different from the others. This clearly devastates Guruto who, at first, struggles quite a bit with his banishment. His days of struggle soon begin to ease, though, when he meets and forms an unlikely friendship with a kingfisher bird. They quickly are quite taken with one another and together, they overcome many an obstacle and form a friendship for the ages.
Over time, the two go on many adventures and even face conflict which, in the end, only helps them grow both individually and as a pair of incredible friends. By the end of their story, you will feel deeply moved not only by the closeness of their bond but by Guruto’s ultimate triumph he was always deserving of. This book is a tale of adventure and friendship, overcoming hardships and disappointment, and persevering in the face of adversity. There is also a noticeable element of accepting others, no matter their differences, physically or otherwise.
Personally, I enjoyed the pacing and educational aspects of this story quite a bit as well as the true meaning behind the plot line. I found it to be exceptionally well written and the perfect read for any child 10 or under. The fact they also get the opportunity to learn facts about animals found in Sub Sahara Africa is just the added bonus this book needed. Anyone with a child in their life will find this book to be a joy to read with them, as they are sure to see the beauty in this story. Pick up your copy today of Big Feet, the Story by Mike Rubel!
