Nina Simone once said, “At this crucial time in our lives, when everything is so desperate, when every day is a matter of survival, I don’t think you can help but be involved.” In a time of social and political upheaval such as the one we are facing now, finding a way to cope with everyday life and find the things in our lives that make it so worth living. These are the themes that drive author Felix Bongjoh’s book of poetry titled Chorus on a Bridge.

The words spoken in these poems are powerful, heartbreaking and very emotional. The author has compiled a large collection of original poems to speak to the ups and downs of the average person’s everyday life, and facing mankind’s ultimate fate of death with the same perseverance and struggle as you would in any other challenge in life.

The author does a marvelous job of conveying this complex theme throughout the book. In the first pages alone, the author says, “The sun is just setting on chasms, Created by the collapsed calculations of tangents, Limping on vacuums, With swollen hearts”. This showcases the author’s larger than life imagery and strong use of emotional pull within the poems themselves.

This is definitely a book for poetry lovers, as well as for anyone who enjoys diving into complex human emotions and struggles, including the age old questions of what the true meaning of life is or what defines our lives overall. For me, I was intrigued from the first pages, as life as a disabled person is not easy and can be overwhelming at times, but finding the light and hope in life is both a struggle and a relief from the challenges of life.

This was an incredible strong, even paced read which every poetry fan will want to get their hands on. The personal struggles and emotions of the poet speak volumes through the work, and make this an emotional rollercoaster like no other. Incredibly vivid and moving, this is one book of poetry you do not want to miss out on. I strongly recommend you pick up your copy of author Felix Bongjoh’s Chorus on a Bridge today.
