In Elizabeth Rea’s Closure, readers will find a new favorite “detective” in the lead character, Kate Jeffers. Kate is a wise-cracking, self-deprecating and bumbling character in her attempts to solve crimes. What makes her a new favorite character? Kate recognizes her weaknesses, laughs at her own expense and turns her personal failures into strengths. She’s one of those characters which you wish were real so that you could take her out for a drink and dish about your day. Soon, she’ll have you laughing at your troubles as she deals up her own daily struggles – which will be much more interesting than your own.
Kate isn’t actually a detective in the literal sense of the word. She started out on the police force, but when a foot chase left her winded, she decided she liked being lazy more than working out. This is a girl after my own heart. Now, Kate is employed on a freelance basis by the Atlanta police and uses her psychic powers to help out on tough cases.
The book opens with a young boy named Eddie, who is playing at a park. A man comes along and convinces Eddie to play a prank on his parents. Eddie agrees and soon finds himself being held captive in a warehouse. Kate is called onto the case and is briefed on Eddie’s disappearance. Doug, Kate’s police contact, has a crush on her which has some interesting romantic subplot developments throughout the story. A dual plotline revolves around Eddie and his attempts to free himself as he befriends one of his kidnappers and tries various ways to get out of his predicament.
Every character within the story is carefully detailed and brought to life. Even minor characters are given personalities which add so much richness to the story. Each character is unique, and most are as quirky as Kate. Rea’s amazing descriptive style doesn’t stop at her characters; she gives the same amount of detail in describing every scene. The book takes place in Atlanta and readers will feel as if they are part of the setting along with characters, seeing, smelling, and hearing what they do.
Rea’s Closure was an absolute treat to read. Kate Jeffers is a plucky heroine who is all too human. What Kate lacks in talent, she more than makes up for with personality and grit. Since this book is first in a series, there’s plenty more where this came from. That fact makes this reviewer very happy indeed. Until we meet again, Kate!
