Children’s books are a fundamental staple — or at least should be — for every child
growing up. They teach life lessons, help children become intelligent and emotionally
aware, as well as build a bonding experience hopefully between child and parent when
story time comes around each night before bed. Not all books are created equal, so
there is something to be said for a great children’s book that teaches life lessons while
evoking emotions that help in the child’s growth who is partaking of this story. With
Connie Gets More Than Her Backyard by Patti Whitehead-Gill you get all of that and so
much more.
This book tells the story of young Connie, who moves from New York City to upstate
New York with her mom. While there, she makes a new best friend in her neighbor
Pam, learns she is adopted and strives to become the owner of an adorable new puppy
that worms their way into her and her mother’s life. It is quite a lot for a young girl such
as Connie to adjust to, but adjust she does while simultaneously finding her own
happiness even with all of these major changes in her new life.
Throughout the story, she has her ups and downs but quickly learns how to persevere.
Even when she so desperately is missing her time with her grandparents, she learns
how to cope with it and enjoy the visits she does receive from them whenever they are
able. Aside from the wonderful storytelling throughout the book, there are artistic
illustrations interspersed to better help the young readers paint the picture of the scenes
playing out before them.
This is a children’s books that people will relate to in some way or another; from new
friendships to revelations to the hope and wonder of a new puppy, there is something
for everyone. Parents will surely get just as much enjoyment from reading this beautiful
tale to their children — or even having the story read to them by their growing young
reader.
