Crossing The Bridge is a brilliant coming-of-age story. Set in the 1900s, the text chronicles the stunning real-life description of an extraordinary woman, Sharon Chase. It paints the picture of how life was during the Depression, the pre-war period, and the post-war era at the turn of the 20th century. Primarily written from young Sharon’s perspective, the author also transverses across her father Tom’s thoughts and her mother Susan’s thoughts of different periods throughout the chapters. During a time when fear, uncertainty, and struggle gripped everyone across Europe, Sharon’s journey was exactly as the title says: across the bridge, as she navigates through life from the shelter of her protective parents to making personal decisions.
Her father’s experiences as a child under an abusive father, leave deep wounds which took years to heal. Nevertheless, Tom is determined to be the best dad to his little girl, Sharon. Author Sharon Chase Hoseley explores Christian themes that compels the reader to reflect on their relationship with God. I could not help rejoicing with Sharon and her mother Susan after reading about Tom’s transformation after they fervently prayed for him for years. Susan’s patience and devotion to God and her family are appreciable and inspiring as well.
The book’s vivid descriptions and striking backdrops are rich and detailed and I felt as though I was with little Sharon running across the farm, with her family during the Great Depression and the War period. Author Hoseley has written a winning story that readers will find encouraging and thought-provoking as well. The weaving of style, diction, and the craft handling of themes gives one the idea the story is honest and elaborately recalled.
Crossing The Bridge by Sharon Chase Hoseley is full of powerful moments that many can identify with. Inserting healthy doses of dialogue into her narrative, the author transforms this splendid text into a rip-roaring read. It is a simple yet reflective and powerful read that most readers will find relatable and enjoyable. I look forward to reading more of this author’s books. Bravo Sharon!
