Destiny: Second Son Chronicles Volume 7 is a work of historical fiction penned by Pamela Taylor. In this eminently readable novel, which is a continuation of a series, readers are introduced to Lord Alfred, the central male lead. Although a standalone, readers are encouraged to read the other books preceding this, to get the flow of the story and understand some of the characters’ decisions.
Lord Alfred has had a tumultuous time keeping his country protected; years of war and making alliances with neighbors have borne some fruit. He now longs to nurture his kingdom and reign in continued peace. However, the evasive Lord Meriden poses continuous threats, and the aggressive ambitions of the Teutons have him worried too. Time is of the essence of his plan if to secure the future is to succeed. Lord Alfred will need all his wits around him to thwart any threat to his kingdom – even one from which he least expected to pose a threat – while protecting everything he holds dear.
Taylor creates a tale redolent of the best of political drama, alliances, annexation, betrayal, and intrigue. With great artistic commitment and skill, the author exposes the political intrigues in medieval Europe. The expressive and descriptive choices create an almost cinematic experience which readers will highly enjoy. The main character is supported by a team of many other memorable characters. Perhaps one of the strengths of this book is the ability to give each character their own story and send of, without adding endless pages which could easily wan the reader’s interest.
Taylor achieves an incredible balance between the expressive dialogues in the story and the action that follows them. Further, the dialogue is accessible to modern audiences but also well balanced to create an atmospheric sense of the middle age period. The prose too, is graceful and dependable. This book certainly piqued my interest in this genre as well as the series.
Destiny: Second Son Chronicles Volume 7 is a novel that will effortlessly drag you forward at a perfect pace until the end. Fans of historical fiction will find this book a great addition to their bookshelf.
