As the age of technology has proven to hold great advancements in all fields, one of the greatest advancements has been in medicine and medical care as a whole, with new technologies making once impossible surgeries and medical breakthroughs a reality. Yet with each advancement made, there comes a time where those with nefarious purposes will seek to upend that progress or use it for themselves. A prominent group of people associated with this type of negative impact are the hackers, and the far reach in which hackers have on the world is both astounding and terrifying.
The question remains: what would hackers do with access to medical records and treatments stored in the digital space? That is the question asked in author Anthony Lee’s Doctor Lucifer. The novel follows a disillusioned internist, who finds his world turned upside down when a hacker known as Doctor Lucifer has changed the medical records of three of his patients, forcing him to take the blame for the hacker’s actions. The internist, Dr. Mark Lin, must work closely with the hospital’s information technology team to unearth the hacker’s identity, but the hunt for the hacker becomes darker and darker as vengeful widows, egotistical rival surgeons, and more begin targeting Dr. Lin.
The author did a spectacular job of crafting a wholly unique protagonist. The anti-hero angle that the character takes, with his cynical point of view and struggles to separate the duty of a doctor from the morally corrupt of those he must treat, made his evolution and journey much more rewarding and engaging to behold. The first-person perspective which the author gives to the writing really did an amazing job of giving readers an insight into the mindset of the protagonist, and the writing itself was very similar to the dialogue that the character Dexter Morgan had with himself in the hit series Dexter.
This is the perfect read for those who enjoy thrillers, especially those who enjoy medical thrillers with a technological edge to them. The detail and atmosphere the author is able to develop throughout the narrative, and the suspense which came from the hunt for the hacker’s identity and the chilling wave of bodies left in the hacker’s wake, make this narrative feel alive on the page. A nail-biter that pushes the protagonist to the edge and keeps the reader on the edge of their seats, author Anthony Lee’s Doctor Lucifer is a must-read medical thriller. The twists and turns the story takes and the rich character arc the protagonist takes make this a gripping narrative to get lost in.
