One of the hardest things that a person can have to endure is an injury or illness that devastates the body in some way. Whether it’s something as simple as a broken bone or an infection, or something far more serious like a life-debilitating illness or a severed limb, the injuries and abuse a body is forced to endure at times can carry a lofty
psychological weight difficult to endure. The desperation and desire to recover in any way possible from such an injury can lead to some life-changing decisions which alter the course of a person’s life altogether.
In author Janus Black’s Enter the Huntress, one such injury becomes the center stage of this action-thriller meets sci-fi adventure. After a soldier endures a devastating combat injury to her body, she volunteers for an experimental program to turn herself into a cyborg. Never one to shy away from risks, the latest decision by the young Captain takes her into an even more dangerous world. With a handsome young Lieutenant as her only companion, the newly minted cyborg and her ally finds themselves launched into the heart of the Colombian jungles, where two hostages and a mysterious meteorite await them. Soon the two allies develop a close bond, jumpstarting a relationship between a cyborg and a human soldier that seems doomed to fail.
The author did an incredible job of world-building in this narrative. The action sequences kept the story itself grounded greatly, but the emphasis on the sci-fi narrative helped to hone in on the fantastic elements this genre has to offer. The powerful imagery of the book’s settings, from the opening pages of the Middle East to the magnificent reaches of the Colombian jungles and beyond, really did an amazing job of bringing these sequences to life on the pages, and felt very much like an action-movie waiting to happen.
This is the perfect read for those who enjoy science fiction and fantasy reads, especially those with an action-adventure element to the story as well as a small amount of will- they/won’t-they romance drama. As a fan of the genres, I was deeply engaged in the narrative and found the air of mystery to be greatly inviting, from the mysterious meteorite that the protagonist is sent to investigate and recover to the mystery behind the backers of the experiment she agreed to and so much more.
Thoughtful, harrowing, and entertaining, author Janus Black’s Enter the Huntress is a must-read sci-fi thriller meets action and adventure novel. The twists and turns in the narrative will have readers begging the author for more, and the final pages promise an open-ended finale that will have readers ready for the next chapter in this brand-new sci-fi series.
